Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve heard that old VW vans are tricky to drive. Is this true?

All our vans were built in the 1970’s, a time when the pace of life was much slower and vehicles were less advanced. VW campers will take a bit of getting used to as there is no power steering, no assisted brakes and a lot of movement in the gearshift. This does add to the character of the van and makes driving a pleasurable challenge.

How old do I have to be to hire a camper?

All drivers must be aged between 25 and 70 and have held a driving licence for at least 3 years.

Is insurance included in the hire charge?

Yes each hire includes fully comprehensive insurance for all named drivers as well as AA breakdown cover.

Can I hire a camper if I have points or other minor endorsements/convictions on my driving licence?

We would prefer a clean driving licence however we appreciate people do have points. Although this may not prohibit you from hiring one of our vehicles please inform us of ANY endorsements/convictions/accidents so that we can check with our insurance company. Please note this may incur an extra cost if accepted.

I have a non– UK driving license, can I still drive a camper?

We accept most EU driving licences, please contact us for further enquiry.

Are personal belongings covered by the insurance?

No, the insurance provided does not cover you for loss, damage or theft of possessions. You will need to take your own holiday/ travel insurance to cover this.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking?

More than 4 weeks before rental start date: you will loose your booking deposit of £150

Within 4 weeks of  the rental start date: 100% of the total hire charge will be  payable. Please refer to terms and conditions.

Please ensure you have your own holiday insurance in place to cover the costs if for any reason you have to cancel your reservation.

What cooking facilities do the vans have?

The vans are currently fitted with a 2 hob cooker. You would be amazed at what can be achieved with 2 gas rings! Andy was challenged to produce a 3 course dinner and pulled it off in spectacular fashion!

Alongside the 2 ring burner we will also supply you with a disposable BBQ.

What type of fuel does the camper take?

The campers run on unleaded petrol.

Can we bring our own electrical items with us?

The vans are equipped with 240v sockets (which only work if plugged into a mains hook-up!) Small electrical items such as phone chargers or IPods are fine. However, we would strongly recommend that you don’t bring large electrical items as storage is limited.

Can we leave our car with you whilst we’re away with the camper?

Yes. Your car will be accommodated on our premises at your own risk.

We wish to travel down to Cornwall by train/ aeroplane. Can you meet us at the station/ airport?

Yes we are happy to meet you at Newquay airport or train station and bring you back to our office to complete the paperwork before introducing you to the van.

Where can we take the van?

We would ask that you keep our vans within Devon and Cornwall. Vans are not permitted to travel outside of this area unless agreed with us at time of booking.

Can we take our pets with us?

YES dogs are permitted in Hank! We are a family of dog lovers and no doubt when you pick up your van you may well be greeted by Lola the cocker spaniel! We would strongly request that if you do bring along any four legged canine friends you also bring with you a throw/blanket to protect our upholstery. Please note that we only allow a maximum of 2 dogs per van (dependant on the breed) at a cost of £20 per hire. From Sept 09 Lady Marmalade is to become our dog free van to cater for those with pet allergies.

Can we take our bikes with us?

Yes you can.  For a supplement we can provide you with a bike rack to fit onto the camper that will hold 2 bikes. Please see the van hire extras.

Can the campers take baby/ child car seats?

The vans are fitted with either lap and/or 3-point harnesses. Please contact us to find out if your chosen van is suitable for your requirements prior to booking.

What happens if we break down?

In the unlikely event that your van should breakdown we supply 24hrs AA breakdown service which should get you going again. If your van cannot be repaired at the roadside, we will either provide you with a replacement van (if available) or reimburse you the cost of days remaining.

What do we need to bring with us?

The campers come with most things you will need for your holiday however, you will need to bring your own bedding and towels.  Just to remind you that space is limited so try not to bring too many large items, but if you plan to stop at a campsite your awning will double your storage space.

On the day of hire you will need to bring the driving licences for all the named drivers, together with a recent utility bill or proof of address for each named driver.

What happens if I run out of fuel for the stove?

You should have sufficient gas for the duration of your hire, however if you do run out, please take the gas bottle to the nearest Camping Gaz provider to have the bottle re-filled. Please retain the receipt and we will reimburse you on the safe return of the van.

Will we need to pre-book a campsite?

We highly recommend that you pre-book campsites, especially during the school holidays. Many people have a romantic notion of being able to park up and spend the night in remote locations and get back to nature. However in real life I think that you can’t beat the nice hot showers and flushing toilets that a campsite can provide (especially after a fun and sandy day at the beach).
