About Nell

Nell is a right-hand drive, 1973 late Bay camper-van, painted in the same hue as the bluest of summer skies. She loves nothing more than roaring off on her next camping trip, and, we have to say, it’s what she does best.

Nell’s well-planned interior comes fully equipped with everything you’ll need to kick back and enjoy a relaxing break from the doldrums of day to day life.

Nell can happily to take up to 4 passengers with her on holiday with seatbelts for all. She can sleep 2 adults on her comfy ¾ width rock and roll bed and a further 2 children in her spacious westfalia style, pop up roof. Her clever fold down buddy seats mean you all sit comfortably inside. If you find you require further living / sleeping space, we also have an optional awning that can be hired to compliment your camper-van experience.

A nickname with a story…

Nell is a nickname for Helen, and legend has it that it was the beautiful princess, Helen, that the Roman Emperor, Magnus Maximus (Macsen Wledig) saw in his dreams whilst in Rome. He sent messengers to search the length and breadth of his kingdom to find her. Eventually they arrive in Snowdonia, the rugged land their master saw in his dreams, and find the princess in a Welsh Chieftain’s castle, in Caer Aber Sein.

The messengers proclaim Princess Helen as Empress of Rome but she refuses to go with them saying if Macsen loves her then he will come to her. Upon hearing this, Macsen makes the long journey to the girl of his dreams and upon sighting, say’s ‘Empress of Rome, all hail!’ and throws his arms about her; and that night she became his bride. The following day she asks for Britain for her father, and three chief castles made for her, and roads to defend it from attackers.

The story is a mix of fact and fiction. Magnus Maximus served as Roman Emperor from AD383 to 388 and Caernarfon (Caer Aber Sein) was an important Roman stronghold. Why not take Nell to visit the remains of this fort, the Segontium and if you’re in the area Caernarfon castle is a must, or, if you fancy more of a road trip why not follow the roman road, Sarn Helen, named after Helen in the story which runs north to south across Wales.
